Cape Sugar Semi-Runner Bean Seeds
$4.00
A later maturing dry bean from South Africa – I’m in Sudbury and can still dry them down, so I guess they aren’t that late. 🙂 These beans, which fall into a group of beans called ‘sugar beans’ in South Africa, are traditionally cooked in specific dishes & recipes. If you google the phrase ‘sugar beans’ or ‘boontjies’, you’ll see what I mean. There’s a lot out there. This is one variety of sugar bean, though I’ve grown another called ‘Gaborone Sugar’. This is a super productive sugar variety, selected very well for producing in great quantities. They are a tall semi-runner, close to 5 feet – I used tall sticks for support. Seeds are lovely, a white base with a fleshy overlay dappled with violet. Rare. 2023 seed. Gratefully received from the wonderful collection of Russ Crow, Woodstock, Illinois.
