A fairly uncommon pea, introduced by Annapolis Seeds, ‘Sapporo Express’ is a very nice pea for shelling, as well as eating as a snow pea. The seeds are smooth and fairly yellow, so it’s surprising that these peas are so sweet; it’s usually the wrinkled peas that contain the sweet gene. A really good producer, even a small trellis will produce a substantial amount of peas. Vines grow to about 4 feet. I can’t emphasize enough how valuable it is to save your own pea seeds – my first attempt at Sapporo in 2023 didn’t yield well, but my grow out this 2nd year in the same garden yielded so much more. I’ve found peas to be uniquely sensitive to local conditions, and will reliably produce up to 5x more when regrown in the same area. 2024 seed.
