Lord Leicester Shelling Pea Seeds

$5.00

Lord Leicester is an old pea, and dates back to the 19th century.  It was listed in the Harrisons of Leicester Garden Seeds and Sundries catalogue from 1919, one of the classic seed trade catalogues in the UK.  It’s breeding is by none other than Thomas Laxton, the famous pea breeder.  Thomas Laxton (1830–1893) was one of the most important British plant breeders of the Victorian era, known especially for his work on peas and other garden vegetables — and Lord Leicester sits in that heritage.  The vines are 6ft, with a long cropping and great flavor.  Historically described as rich, sweet, and buttery, excellent for fresh eating. 20 seeds/packet.  Many thank to Jan for sharing these with me!
