This is a gherkin selected for smooth skin and larger fruits. Their production blew away my regular cucumbers, by far, and they weren’t as needy. The fruits are actually very much like cucumbers, a bit less juicy inside and light green instead of dark green. These are also more round. Like cucumbers it’s better to eat them younger than older, but they don’t need to be super small. I ate mine the size of a large plum, and the plants just kept pumping out more fruits. I thought the taste AND texture was superb. If I had to choose between these and cucumbers, it would be a tough decision. They do share the same trait of loathing cold temperatures, though these aren’t as prone to damping off as cucumbers. But a night close to zero would do in small seedlings. The leaves are more deeply lobed than regular cuke leaves and they can take drought MUCH better. I never detected any bitterness, and I never fertilised even in a large tub. Wonderful variety worth trying for a cucumber alternative. Apparently makes excellent pickles. 2022 seed.  *Note:  Gherkin in photo is a baby, and should be harvested at a larger size.

Fruits look like green, spiky grenades, sparking a lot of interest from passersby. Fleshier and less juicy than a cucumber but otherwise very similar, a nice novel addition to salads. Robust plants also demonstrated very good resistance to powdery mildew, which on the West Coast is a matter of when, not if, it will kill your cucurbits.
