Black Sesame Seeds

A fun and unusual crop to grow here in the North, but grow they do!  It is surprising how well sesame can do despite our sometimes short seasons.  These are pretty plants with pastel pink blossoms, and they remind one a little of foxglove flowers.  Small seedpods follow behind the flowers and fill with sesame seeds as the season progresses.  Even if the pods have not completely dried as the first frost threatens you can cut the stems, turn them upside down in a paper bag and let them finish drying indoors.  I love to use the black seeds on top of my homemade spring rolls, it’s such a lovely touch!
