Over 100 years old! This lovely green snap bean was introduced in1914 under the name Black Creaseback by Van Antwerp’s Seed Store in Mobile, Alabama. A historical seed catalog from that era (the Seed Book of the South) lists it as a high-quality pole snap bean with long, meaty green pods. In 1924, the variety was *reintroduced* by the Chris Reuter Seed Company of New Orleans, Louisiana, under the new name Reuter’s Ideal Market, which stuck and was eventually shortened to Ideal Market and presumably thought to be a good choice for market gardeners. I thought it was a really wonderful fresh snap bean variety which braved some challenging conditions in 2025. Pods are about 5 inches with early maturity. The black in the name is a reference to the seed color and the creaseback to a slight ridge in the bean seams, which made them distinct from the commercial beans being developed at the time.
