Aunt Molly’s Ground Cherry Seeds

$4.00

An historic fruiting bush. Like many lesser known fruits, there can arise a great variety of opinion in regards to taste. Some love ground cherries, some can’t stand them. I fall under the ‘love-them-so-yummy’ category. Plant height is greatly affected by spacing – closer than 1 foot and they can grow to 3 or even 4 feet tall. Give them room and they will stay at about 1-1.5 feet. Yellow berries in paper husks fall from the plants when ripe. I find they taste somewhat like pineapple and citrus, tangy. I prefer them a little under-ripe so as to get that sour twang. An excellent fruit that can be baked in cakes, breads & used in pies. These can last in their husks, if stored well, for months after harvest. Thus they also went by the name ‘winter cherry’.  I prefer them a little under-ripe so as to get that sour twang.
