The ‘Criolla Zacapitan’ is a rare, ancient heirloom tomato variety originating from the tiny Nahua village of Zacatipán, in the highlands of Puebla, Mexico. Considered a “landrace” variety, it is closely related to wild strains and has been historically grown for subsistence by the Nahua people of the region. The term “criollo” refers to the very ribbed and ruffled fruit. Fruits are a dark pink color and need to be cut from the vines, as they can’t be pulled off easily. Such a truly unique tomato, which yields well. Fruits perish quickly off the vine, and are quite juicy.
