The name of this basil is misleading – this is NOT the species Ocimum basilicum<\/em> that most culinary basils belong to, it’s Ocimum americanum.<\/em> This Lime basil is not the Italian type of basil commonly bought on store shelves at C Tire, this is a plant closer to lemon verbena in it’s scent and use. I believe this species originates in Thailand. I grew to love this plant due to its intoxicating lemony lime scent, and it probably would make a great tea herb too. It smells heavenly. The leaves of this basil have a deep citrus flavor, much more so than verbena, and I’d like to experiment more with it in the future. This lovely basil variety is rather exceptional.
