A fairly uncommon pea, introduced by Annapolis Seeds, ‘Sapporo Express’ is a very nice pea for shelling, as well as eating as a snow pea. The seeds are smooth and fairly yellow, so it’s surprising that these peas are so sweet; it’s usually the wrinkled peas that contain the sweet gene. A really good producer, even a small trellis will produce a substantial amount of peas. Vines grow to about 4 feet. I can’t emphasize enough how valuable it is to save your own pea seeds – my first attempt at Sapporo in 2023 didn’t yield well, but my grow out this 2nd year in the same garden yielded so much more.
